Easter Poem by Ulil Abshar-Abdalla, an Islamic scholar & activist

Here is a poem written by Ulil Abshar-Abdalla, an Islamic scholar from Indonesia affiliated to Jaringan Islam Liberal (Liberal Islam Network), a group which voices out a liberal interpretation of Islam.

After completing his master’s degree in religion in Boston University, he went on and continued his PhD studies in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, Harvard University.

In 2003, a group of Indonesian Islamic cleric from Forum Ulama Umat Islam issued a death fatwa against Ulilfor an article that Ulil wrote in Kompas in 2002, “Menyegarkan Kembali Pemahaman Islam” (Rejuvenating the Islamic Understanding) that is considered heretical by the clerics. In March 2011, a letter bomb addressed to Ulil at Komunitas Utan Kayu exploded, injuring a police officer.

Ulil also defended the right of the Ahmadi people, which is an uncommon stance within conservative Islam. He also opposes many of fatwas by Majelis Ulama Indonesia, such as the one forbidding to give Christmas greetings to Christians.

Easter Poem

By Ulil Abshar-Abdalla

He who collapsed,

on the holy virgin’s lap,

resurrected after three days, against death.

He who was weak,

revived an impossible expectation.

He who is the weakest,

His body bears our sufferings.

***************************

He who is the weakest,

His suffering conquers kings of the world.

He who falled in love with morning,

after being stoned painfully.

He who looked up to the holy sky,

swathed in scarlet red cloth: Love me, please!

****************************************

They argue

about who died on the wooden cross.

I’m not interested in the debate of theologians.

It is the pouring blood which strongly touches me.

When I boast my faith,

The painful body lying on that wood,

keeps reminding me:

In fact, He also suffers, with the insulted.

************************************

My Mohammed, your Jesus, your Buddha, your Krisna, your Confucius,

they all are my teachers,

who teach me about the vastness of the world, and love.

*************************************************

Your disease, O believers:

You easily become complacent, arrogant,

boasting yourself like a peacock.

You are eager to judge!

*********************

The body with the pouring blood on that wood,

is not a peacock.

He teaches us, about love,

for those who are misled and insulted.

**********************************

Suffering sometimes teaches you

about a humble faith.

The letters in the scriptures,

often make you feel you are the only holiest person.

**********************************************

Yes, your Jesus is also my Jesus,

Ha has saved me from a faith,

which is arrogant and too proud.

He makes me love the insulted!

****************************

Puisi Paskah

Oleh : Ulil Abshar-Abdalla

Ia yang rebah,
di pangkuan perawan suci,
bangkit setelah tiga hari, melawan mati.
Ia yang lemah,
menghidupkan harapan yang nyaris punah.
Ia yang maha lemah,
jasadnya menanggungkan derita kita.

Ia yang maha lemah,
deritanya menaklukkan raja-raja dunia.
Ia yang jatuh cinta pada pagi,
setelah dirajam nyeri.
Ia yang tengadah ke langit suci,
terbalut kain merah kirmizi: Cintailah aku!

Mereka bertengkar
tentang siapa yang mati di palang kayu.
Aku tak tertarik pada debat ahli teologi.
Darah yang mengucur itu lebih menyentuhku.

Saat aku jumawa dengan imanku,
tubuh nyeri yang tergeletak di kayu itu,
terus mengingatkanku:
Bahkan, Ia pun menderita, bersama yang nista.

Muhammadku, Yesusmu, Krisnamu, Buddhamu, Konfuciusmu,
mereka semua guru-guruku,
yang mengajarku tentang keluasan dunia, dan cinta.

Penyakitmu, wahai kaum beriman:
Kalian mudah puas diri, pongah,
jumawa, bagai burung merak.
Kalian gemar menghakimi!

Tubuh yang mengucur darah di kayu itu,
bukan burung merak.
Ia mengajar kita, tentang cinta,
untuk mereka yang disesatkan dan dinista.

Penderitaan kadang mengajarmu
tentang iman yang rendah hati.
Huruf-huruf dalam kitab suci,
kerap membuatmu merasa paling suci.

Ya, Yesusmu adalah juga Yesusku.
Ia telah menebusku dari iman,
yang jumawa dan tinggi hati.
Ia membuatku cinta pada yang dinista!

Satu Tanggapan to “Easter Poem by Ulil Abshar-Abdalla, an Islamic scholar & activist”

  1. Tanagekeo Says:
