“I rule the waves!”

These children are learning a lifeskill of safety by their own choice. In school they are never taught how to swim. Their teachers are busy to make syllabi dan lesson plans based on government-driven curriculum. Many schools located along beaches of Indonesia, especially in urban areas neglect to provide this type of lifeskill education. (“Saya menguasai laut!”

I do master swimming competence!

During the time of emergency like tsunami in Aceh, mathematics competencies will not help me. This swimming competence will save my life. And we learn this competence without any teacher, any lesson plan, any book, any teaching aid, any budget. Hi, our teachers (throughout Indonesia), do you help us? Or, do you even destroy our future? (Saya benar-benar menguasai kompetensi berenang! Jika tiba-tiba datang bencana tsunami seperti di Aceh, kompetensi matematika tak akan mampu menolong saya. Kompetensi berenanglah yang akan menyelamatkanhidupkan. Dan kami belajar kompetensi ini tanpa guru, tanpa RPP, tanpa buku, tanpa alat peraga, tanpa dana. Wahai, guru, guru (di seluruh Indonesia), apakah kalian membantu kami? Atau, apakah kalian bahkan menghancurkan masa depan kami?)

flying-to-the-future

Flying to the future.

Childhood is a golden time for learning to face unpredictable life in the future. Child’s brain will develop faster  if  the child makes lots of movements, swims and conduct a variety of chid traditional games.

I’m courageous to face the waves. Do teachers encourage children to solve problems? Problemsolving is a key concept of lifeskill education. (Saya berani menghadapi gelombang. Apakah guru-guru mendorong anak-anak memecahkan masalah? Pemecahan masalah adalah salah satu konsep kunci pendidikan kecakapan hidup).

“Welcome the unpredictable future!”

The standing kid on the wooden bridge is holding a softdrink, produced by a company in Java, under license of a multinational corporation. Indonesian children, especially in the cities, face a problem of obecity due to softdrinks and junk food. Bacan people prefer mineral water produced by companies in Java than healthy water from the soil of Bacan. This is a wrong life style which should be changed by teachers.

Exploring into the sea.

Look at the sea instead of looking at the land. The future of Indonesia, especially the future of North Maluku, depends on the vision of maritime excellence. Primary teachers can start with the local content curriculum to be integrated in relevant topics. They will solve the problem of fish bribery by the Thailand fishboats and the use of tigger trawl by rich fishermen and the use of dinamite which destroys sea wealth and treasure of North Maluku. (Menjelajahi laut.

We are the champions!

If Obama’s brain was able to develop by the support of tempe and tohu during his life in Jakarta, we can be better, because fish is our daily food menu. Provide us wtth a variety of access and we are ready to make a quantum leap! Thank you, Save the Children. You come to encourage us to move forward on our own feet. Terima kasih, LSM Save the Children.
